Tell us about your process.
My process is still very traditional, i still handshape and build the boards from start to finish myself. Keeps the connection to your work really tight and I just enjoy the process as a whole.
When did you shape your first board?
I shaped my first board when i was 16 or 17 years old in my backyard, i had ripped the glass off of my first surfboard and reshaped it into a little mini Simmons type of thing.
Do you consider yourself a craftsman, an artist, or both?
I think shaping is a pretty even mix of craftsmanship and art for me, a lot of it is mathematical and a lot is much looser and has room for more of an artistic approach. I think surfboards are a cool medium because it can be as numerical or as artistic as you’d like.
Why collab with Ghostship?
The collab with Ghostship has been such a cool project based around a place that has been such a big part of my life, so cool to honor that and get to do some boards with Andy.
How does working between Outer Banks and Oahu influence your boards?
Splitting time between the outer banks and Hawaii has been the best experience ever for me. Being able to travel seasonally and work where ever is in season has kept a consistent feeling instead of the waiting for winters to be over im really looking forward to them.
Where (or in what state of mind) is your happy place?
My happy place is just any time in the water surfing with friends.

What are your life’s passions?
Being creative, travel, family, surfing, skating, snowboarding, and making surfboards and art.
What are your creative outlets?
I build performance-minded, handcrafted, colorful surfboards. I also like to create sculptures from the waste of the board building process.
What made you want to start making surfboards?
I started building boards because it was a craft I could do for life . Also when I was young I liked board design and always got custom boards made locally, so that kinda involvement in the process got me hyped to make my own boards .
Are your boards made for the Outer Banks?
My boards are suited for the Outer Banks because that’s where I have lived and surfed for more than 30 years. I especially like slightly wider nose outlines, wide point forward mid sections combined with hard-edged pulled-in tails and secret bottom concaves. All this creates a board that paddles well, goes fast, and provides performance on tight transitions.
How would you describe your personal approach to building boards?
My approach to board building is all about enjoying the art of hand-crafting something that stokes people out when they ride it. It makes a big difference that I really enjoy what I do.
How would you describe “performance hybrids”?
To me Performance Hybrids is taking the best thing about short boards (hard edges, bottom contours and good foil) and combining them with the qualities that make Fish work (wide point forward, slightly thicker and wider outlines).
Any words of wisdom for young artists/shapers coming up?
My advice to young board builders is to learn the entire process, it’s a lot to learn and that kind of experience will reflect in your boards. As for young artists, put in the time develop your skills and do it for the love of creating and good things will happen.
